Mining Dispute Resolution Clears Path for Lithium Exploration in Zambia’s Mapatizya District

Maamba Energy Cleared to Advance Lithium Exploration After Government-Mediated Settlement

A government-led settlement of a long-running mining licence dispute has cleared the way for the advancement of lithium exploration activities in Zambia’s Mapatizya District, marking a potentially significant development for the country’s growing critical minerals sector.

The agreement brings to a close a three-year dispute between Builders Mining Corporation Limited and Maamba Energy Limited over an alleged encroachment involving their respective mining licence areas.

The resolution was achieved through mediation and stakeholder engagement facilitated by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development.

The settlement is expected to unlock mineral development opportunities in Mapatizya, particularly for Maamba Energy, which can now proceed with its lithium exploration programme following the resolution of the licence-related conflict.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Hapenga Kabeta said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to promoting dialogue, cooperation and peaceful dispute resolution within the mining industry.

He noted that timely resolution of mining disputes is essential for maintaining investor confidence and ensuring mineral assets are developed for the benefit of the economy.

ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda said the settlement was achieved amicably, without financial obligations being imposed on either party.

He said the agreement allows both companies to move forward with their respective development plans while creating conditions for increased investment in the district.

According to Musonda, Maamba Energy can now accelerate its lithium exploration activities, while Builders Mining Corporation can continue advancing its existing mining development projects.

He added that the resolution has the potential to unlock Mapatizya’s broader mineral wealth and support economic growth in the area.

Maamba Energy Chief Executive Officer Retired Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus Minwalla welcomed the outcome and thanked the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development and shareholders for their role in facilitating the settlement.

He said the agreement removes a major obstacle to the company’s planned mining activities and provides certainty for future exploration work.

Builders Mining Corporation Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mulenga described the settlement as an example of how mining disputes can be resolved through constructive engagement rather than prolonged legal conflict.

He said both parties had agreed to accommodate each other’s interests and pursue a mutually beneficial way forward.

The development comes at a time when Zambia is seeking to strengthen its position in the global critical minerals value chain.

With demand for lithium continuing to grow due to its importance in electric vehicle batteries and energy storage technologies, the resolution of the Mapatizya dispute could help accelerate new exploration activity and attract further investment into the country’s emerging lithium sector.
